Lieutenant General CP Cariappa takes over the command of 1 Corps
Lucknow: Lieutenant General Codanda Poovaiah Cariappa assumed the coveted appointment of General Officer Commanding of the elite 1 Corps at Mathura on 03 April 2020. He took over the reins of the Mathura Corps from Lieutenant General Amardeep Singh Bhinder who during his tenure led 1 Corps to greater heights of professionalism.
Lieutenant General CP Cariappa, an alumni of National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy, was commissioned on 09 June 1984 into the 4th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles. He is an expert in manoeuvre warfare, counter terrorism and operational art. The General Officer has also held varied coveted command, instructional and staff appointments. He has served in all types of terrain to include deserts, mountains and plains covering a wide spectrum of military operations that has given him an intellectual edge in understanding the nuances of complex military operations both at operational and strategic levels. He is also an alumni of prestigious Defence Services Staff College, Higher Command at Army War College and NDC at United States Army War College.
The General officer is Masters in Philosophy in Defence Studies & Management and Masters in Strategic Studies. He has commanded a Mountain Division and an Infantry Brigade, and has made valuable and laudable contributions while serving as part of United Nations Peace Keeping Force at Mozambique (Africa) and Iraq - Kuwait. Prior to taking over command of elite 1 Corps, he was the Military Secretary to the President of India at New Delhi.
On assuming the command, he exhorted all ranks to continue working with the same zeal, enthusiasm and focus on operational preparedness with realistic training to achieve exceptional level of military professionalism so that 1 Corps continues to undertake its mandated role of defeating military mis-adventurism by enemy against India. He emphasized that his priority is ’fight against COVID-19 threat’.
