Brand Canada seeks to ride on Jaipur’s start-up ecosystem
Jaipur: Brand Canada, a first of its kind day-long roadshowhosted by Indo-Canadian Business Chamber (ICBC) in partnership with Air Canada and supported by the Trade Commissioner Service of the High Commission of Canada in India, reached out to the business and trade community of the city on Wednesday, showcasing various fields of potential collaboration and investment as well as how easy it was to do business with Canada.
A Canadian delegation led by Andrew Smith, Minister (Commercial), High Commission of Canada in India;Ms.Nadira Hamid, CEO, ICBC,Mr.ArunPandeya, General Manager and Country Head India from Air Canada and Ms. Elaine D'Souza, Senior International Business Development Consulate General of Canada and Mr. Francis Paradis, Consul and Director, Quebec Government Officein Mumbaiamong others, emphasised upon Canada’s eagerness to partner with the Pink City and Capital of Rajasthan – Jaipur as a growing business hub of the country.
Speaking at the event Mr.Smith,said, “Canada recognises that India’s drive towards becoming a $5 trillion economy rests on the shoulders of important cities like Jaipur with its immense potential for business, growing start-up base and manufacturing industries.”
“Jaipur is recognised as the next biggest start-up base of the country and we have been analysing the same since long. The uniqueness lies in the factor that Jaipur not only has an inherent nature for growing traditional industries but has also been a base of a variety of start-ups ranging across various sectors giving a spur to the economy of the state. The rising impetus of the city in digitization and information technology makes it a perfect fit for Canada. In this context, we strongly believe that, Canada can play a huge role in helping cities like Jaipur realise their full potential given its diversified expertise in technology innovation and leadership.We hope Brand Canada ushers in a new era of partnership between Jaipur and Canadian businesses and companies.”
Also sharing her views was Ms.Nadira Hamid, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), ICBC, saying, “ICBC has been at the forefront of strengthening trade ties between India and Canada and with BRAND CANADA we are looking to expand that relationship across the length and breadth of the country. Jaipur is a key spoke in that wheel given its huge potential and favourable geographic location and connectivity. In addition, Jaipur is ranked 7th amongst all Indian cities in terms of GDP growth and is the second largest producer of cement and contributes one tenth of the salt produced in India. This ascertains us of the critical role that it is playing in the Indian economy and a strong business relationship with the city will surely benefit both Canada and India. We look forward to closer ties with the business community of this wonderful city.”
Mr.N.K. Jain, President, the Employers Association of Rajasthan and member of FICCI Rajasthan, State Council was present at the event and said, “The technology that Canada possesses can be really helpful to India and Jaipur. They have been contributing to clean technology and cyber security on a large scale and there is a huge opportunity to collaborate there apart from the obvious space of education. I believe Brand Canada as an initiative is bringing all the right notes together to help the cause.”
There were high-level representations from Canadian provinces as well with Mr. Francis Paradis, Consul and Director, Quebec Government Office in Mumbai, leading the Quebec delegation, which is Canada’s largest province by territory. He also gave an introduction to the audience about Saskatchewan province - the only province without a natural border.
The Jaipur leg also saw a plethora of representations from Jaipurby the likes of MyTeam11 – India’s second largest fantasy sports gaming company, Jaipur Chamber of commerce, Mahindra Smart City Jaipur and Cairn Indiaamongst many others.
The sessions for the day were as follows:
- The day began with an address by Mr. N.K. Jain, President, The Employers Association of Rajasthan and Member of FICCI Rajasthan, State Council who stressed on the fact of Canada and India sharing key trade relationships and the same should be promoted at all cost
- It was followed by asession by Mr.Smith- India Business Partnerships and areas for collaboration. His session stressed upon various aspects which included investing in Canada, study in Canada, investor and start-up visa procedures.
- Followed by a session by Mr.Pandeyaexplained how Air Canada is working towards making various parts of India more connected through their vast network and reasonable costing.
Brand Canada will now move to the next leg which is to be held in Aurangabad on 4th of February 2020, followed by roadshows across Pune, Baroda, Bhubaneswar, Ludhiana, Mysore and finally culminate in the city of Visakhapatnam. It kicked-off on January 13th in Gurugram, Haryana.
