Jaipur : In the context of Positive Parenting Seminar, a talk was held by Prof. (Dr.) Sanjeev P. Sahni, renowned Behavioural Scientist and Principal Director of the Jindal School of Behavioural Sciences (JIBS).The talk discussed the need for positive parenting with a primary emphasis on certain parameters and concepts to raise better and more successful human beings.

“It is said that children are the reflection of their parents and parenting is the key to how the personality of a child shapes up. The worldviews, beliefs, and values of a child are implicitly developed and influenced by those of the parents,” Prof. (Dr) Sanjeev P. Sahni said.

The world is changing and so is every society. Indian society stands no exception to this fact. There is so much chaos in today’s VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and agile) world with rapid transformation happening every single day. Parenting has become very tough. The way parents deal with their children is also the key factor to determine the approach children will have to problem solving, decision making, goal pursuance, handling stress, understanding and managing their emotions, dealing with success and failures, and the like. Parents play a very important role in supporting the development of their child during the crucial period of 0-7 years. These years of child development are crucial to the health, well-being and overall trajectory of the lives of the children in a variety of ways. Fortunately, there are many things that parents can do to help their children develop and grow.

Dr Sahni emphasized on the behavior patterns of parents and consequent influence on children. These behaviors can be both consistent and inconsistent. There is an adverse effect of parents’ inconsistent behavior on children and how their behaviors are modeled as a result. There can be communication roadblocks, which can also adversely affect the mental health of the child. At home, children occasionally become embroiled in conflict with parents, which is inevitable. Some bickering and conflict in childhood helps kids discover positive ways of resolving disagreements. A respectful conflict resolution teaches kids during childhood the skills needed to master healthy ways to express and control and act on their emotions. Helping kids develop healthy confliction skills does take time and a consistent approach. Children always watch how parents behave. According to Social Learning Theory, people learn by watching others. Children do the same. Kids repeat what they hear, and they imitate what they see. For this reason, it is important for parents to be mindful of the things they are teaching their children.
