Conference on “7R’s - The Roadmap for a Greener Tomorrow” organized by CII Rajasthan in Jaipur
Jaipur: Confederation of Indian Industry Rajasthan (CII Rajasthan) along with Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board, RIICO and CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre today organized an interactive conference on The 7R’s : The Roadmap for a Greener Tomorrow at Hotel Royal Orchid, Tonk Road, Durgapura, Jaipur. The main theme of the conference was “Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Refurbish, Recover and Recycle.”
Urging the participants to learn from Indian values of respecting the environment to curb pollution, Mr. Pawan Kumar Goyal, Chairman, Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board said, “From ancient times, in our Indian tradition, we have been worshiping the nature but sadly, in modern time, inspired from the materialistic requirements, we have exploited out natural resources in merciless manner. While explaining his department’s work, he clarified that the objective of the board is not only to control the pollution but also to protect the environment and while discharging this duty at times, considering the gravity of the situation; we take tough decisions as well.
Addressing the inaugural session, Ms. Shailaja Deval, Member Secretary, Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board shared that being a regulatory board, they have to always maintain a balance between development and environment. According to her, we have to change our priorities from reducing the poverty and survival of individual to survival with dignity and not only industries but we as individuals ourselves have to come forward for this change. Talking about the 7R’s (Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Refurbish, Recover and Recycle) she said that these 7R’s are the seven pillars of the circular economy i.e. zero waste economy and that the responsibility for change has to be shared among people and motivated and self-driven people are required for this change process to escalate. And looking at the diseases taking place from air pollution, she said that it is high time when we look back and introspect and see what the future holds. She also briefed about the health hazards arising from pollution.
Mr. K S Venkatagiri, Executive Director & Head, CII- Godrej Green Business Centre gave a detailed presentation on Usefulness of Green Buildings, Energy Conservation and how Green foot prints can be increased.
Addressing the house, Mr. Amit Gossain, Managing Director, Kone India explained Industries’ initiatives towards environment protection but also insisted that a lot has to be done also. He shared that according to the state of India’s environment report, India’s position of global Environment performance index has fallen from 141 in 2016 to 177 in 2018. He also briefed that there is a disparity in resource and waste management as 92% of Indian Companies have waste reduction policies but only 31% of them have specific waste reduction targets to back up the said policies.
Mr. Sanjay Upadhyay, NGT Expert & Managing Partner, Enviro Legal Defence Firm discussed judicial aspects related to the subject. He said that the idea of setting up National Green Tribunal (NGT) was to inculcate judicial and technical minds in specialized body to address the prevailing issues related to pollution control and environmental protection. He briefed the audience about the jurisdiction, procedure and three principles namely sustainable development, precautionary principle and polluter pays principle while deciding any matter. While explaining various real cases’ examples, he urged participants to be more proactive and approach quickly to the forum whenever any issue arises along with whatever one claims it must be seconded by evidences as well.
Presenting the welcome address, Mr. Anand Mishra, Chariman, CII Rajasthan said, “During operation 100 per cent pollution-free environment may not be possible by Industries. However, it is imperative to ensure that industrial units cause the least pollution. Adequate and effective pollution control measures are required so that adverse effects on the environment are minimized. Necessary technological know-how and institutional back up support are available in this regard.”
Mr Nitin Gupta, Director and Head, CII Rajasthan said that today industries are facing many challenges related to economic slowdown on the one side and environmental issues and concerns on the side. We are privileged to have the presence senior officials and experts to whom we request to kindly advise industries on how we can work jointly on regular basis to resolve issues of concern related to Environment and Pollution.
A session on “Current policy perspective and regulatory landscape on environmental management and latest trends in Environmental Sustainability” saw speakers like Mr. Sanjay Srivastava, Convenor – CII Panel on Infrastructure & Business Head, Mahindra Worldcity Jaipur Ltd.; Dr. Vijai K Singhal, Chief Environmental Engineer, Rajasthan State Pollution Board; Mr. N Muthusezhiyan, Principal Counsellor, CII Godrej Green Business Center; Mr. Ajay Patil, Business Unit Head, Assembly, JCB India Ltd. and Dr. Desh Deepak Chaturvedi, Head, EHS, DCM Shriram Ltd., Kota talk about various topics like Green Building, Solid Waste Management, Unplastic – Avoiding Single use Plastic Usage, Air Pollution control etc.
While during the session on “Smarter Water Management for a Better Tomorrow” had Mr. Jaimni Uberoi, Chair, IGBC Jaipur Chapter and Managing Partner, J Mohanco; Dr. SK Jain, Regional Director, Western Region Central Ground Water Board; Mr. Gangadhara Reddy CEO & MD, BlueDrop Enviro Pvt. Ltd.; Mr. V Rajesh, Senior Consultant, Centre for Urbanization Buildings & Environment (CUBE IITM); Mr. TK Chakraborty, Team Leader & Head- Operations, Saint Gobain Glass India Pvt. Ktd.; Mr. Priyesh Bhatti, Director, Gujarat Enviro Protection and Infrastructure Ltd.; Mr. Anil Kumar, Managing Director, Water Haskoning DHV Consulting Pvt. Ltd. and Mr. ML Meena, General Manager, Environment Management, RIICO Ltd. talk about various topics viz. Ground Management & Control, Waste Water Treatment, recycle & Reuse of Treated Wastewater, Building Green Rajasthan etc., another session on “Technologies and services for Eco Friendly Industrial Setup” had Mr. Akshay Hada, Chairman & MD, Akshay Infrasys Industries Pvt. Ltd.; Mr. Vinod Paliwal, AGM, Sustainability & Environment, Shree Cement Ltd.; Mr. Madhusudhan Rapole, Managing Director, Oorja Energy Engineering; Mr. Pawan Maheshwari, Founder & CEO, Packmile Pvt. Ltd.; Mr. Swapnil Potdar, Director, Ira Water and Mr. Yuvraaj Mannickam, Head, Civil & Infra, Hero Moto Corp Research & Development Center discuss on Journey for Sustainable Development, Cleantech heating and cooling solutions, Green Packaging, Water Conservation etc.
At the end, Mr. Vishal Baid, Vice Chairman, CII Rajasthan & Partner, Vitromed Healthcare proposed a vote of thanks and shared that more than 200 participants and industry members took part in the conference today.
